About World Water Day And #Scuba Divers

World Water Day is an annual United Nations event mainly focused on food security, access to water for agriculture, droughts and the like. So… What does it have to do with scuba divers?!

March 22, 1993, was the first World Water Day. It was created by the United Nations as a “means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.” Source: UNwater.org

Each year, there’s a different theme. For March 22, 2012, the World Water Day theme is “Water and Food Security”. It’s not just about having water to drink… Water is used in producing most of what we eat, including milk and meat. It’s called agriculture!!

This year’s World Water Day is focusing on “the relationships between water and food production and look at ways to feed growing populations within the boundaries of our freshwater resources.” There are over 7 billion of us on this planet at the moment, with another 2 billion expected to join between now and 2050. “It takes 1500 liters of water to produce 1 kg of wheat, but it takes 10 times more to produce 1kg of beef!”

OK! I get it! It’s about agricultural issues with a growing worldwide population. So… May I ask again: What does it have to do with recreational scuba diving?

Well… Nothing, “directly” related. Except… We love water! We love the planet! We love discovering the oceans and visiting healthy scuba diving sites. It’s all interconnected, no?

It’s more fun and healthy to go scuba diving in clean fresh water than in polluted streams, right?

Therefore… Your team of scuba diving professionals at Total Diving - Montreal Scuba is taking action. We are committing ourselves to:

  • watching our own fresh water consumption at the dive shop
  • actively promoting fresh water conservation
  • purchasing recycled and recyclable products
  • purchasing sustainable, organic and fair trade food products

Furthermore, on World Water Day on Thursday, March 22, 2012, Total Diving - Montreal Scuba will announce a new major commitment to our planet. You’re invited. Simply register on the Montreal Scuba Diving Meetup group.
